Hall of Fame

 

Since opening its doors in 1974, Lyndon Baines Johnson High School has developed a rich tradition of academic and athletic success.  Many former Jaguars have gone on to success in sports at the collegiate level and even at the professional level.  This web page is intended to recognize those former students and encourage present and future students to work hard and to excel, both in the classroom and on the playing field.

Kenneth Alexander

Former Florida State Seminole great Kenneth Alexander was a leader for the Seminoles on and off of the field. As a team captain in 1993, Alexander led FSU with 122 tackles, including nine for loss. Alexander played against his former teammate at LBJ, Greg Lane when FSU played Notre Dame in 1993.  FSU lost that game to Notre Dame, 31-24.  Also an excellent student, Alexander earned Academic All-America and ACC All-Academic honors and was the recipient of an NCAA postgraduate scholarship. Alexander lives in Tallahassee and is an attorney in the Legal Division for the Department of Financial Services.

Lucius Alexander

Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire.  Lucius greatly improved his fitness and conditioning since arriving on campus. 2005: Saw a good deal of time with the junior varsity and limited varsity action. 2004: Appeared in final two games of the season...Spent most of the year with the junior varsity. High School: Earned three letters in football, serving as captain in senior year...Also lettered twice in basketball and twice in track...Three-year all-district selection...All-CenTex as a senior...Nominated for Wendy's High School Heisman Scholarship Award and the Franklin Watkins Award for African-American Scholar-Athletes. Personal: A terrific singer who used to be in his church choir ...Would like to be a game programmer after graduation.

Reggie Anderson

Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas.  Anderson was a 2-year starter for the Horned Frogs.  In 1993 he led the team in tackles with 63 solo and 81 assisted.  His best game that year was when he recorded 20 tackles against Oklahoma State.  In 1994 Anderson had 94 tackles, 57 solo and 37 assisted.  he notched 12 solo and 1 assisted tackle against Texas Tech in the last game of the season.

Baylor University, Waco, Texas. Pictured with Head Coach Grant Teaff. Ates played quarterback for the Jaguars and was named Player of the Year, his senior season.

Steve Ates

Abilene Christian University, Abilene, Texas.  Voted second team all-Lone Star Conference as a senior. Honorable mention All-American. HARLON HILL TROPHY NOMINEE in 1987. This award is equivalent to the HEISMAN TROPHY for Division II. LSC Defensive Player of the week 10/31/87. One of top college division LBs in nation in 1986. Voted first team all-LSC as a junior by coaches and named honorable mention All-American by Associated Press and Football News. Also 1987 pre-season All-American in NFL Draft Report. LSC Defensive Player of Week against ETSU on 11/8 1986. Also starter as sophomore in 1985 (honorable mention all-LSC). On ACU's top 10 sacks list.

Per Bjornehammar

Per, or Pele, as he was known as an exchange student from Sweden for 1 year at LBJ High School, played football (Kicker and Fullback) and soccer for the Jaguars.  Per played running back on the Swedish National football team that won the 2005 European Championships and finished 2nd in the World Games in Duisberg, Germany that year.  In 2007 Per is a running back on the Swedish National team competing in the World Games in Kawasaki, Japan.  In the opening round against France, Per rushed for 108 yards and scored the winning touchdown on a brutal 28 yard romp.

Henderson County Junior College located in Athens, Texas.  In 1986, the school's name was changed to Trinity Valley Community College.  The TVCC Cardinals boast a rich football tradition, bolstered by 2 national junior college championships - 1994 and 1997.

Trey Buck

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Terre Haute, IN.  Soccer Goalkeeper for the Fightin' Engineers, who play in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.  Buck started his collegiate career at Ohio State before transferring to Rose-Hulman.

bullet4-year starting goalkeeper at LBJ… earned first team all-district honors all four years … named team's Most Valuable Player as a senior.
bulletNamed 1st Team All Conference and Co-Newcomer of the Year at Rose-Hulman.
bulletBuck established a school record with a 1.17 goals against average and allowed just 21 goals in 18 starts for the Engineers. He recorded a school record 11 victories, three shutouts, 72 saves and a .774 save percentage in net. Buck recorded a season-high seven saves on three occasions, including a 4-2 win at Wabash in September 2005.
bulletBuck was the first Fightin' Engineer men's soccer player to be named to the Great Lakes Region All Region Soccer Team.

Ed Byrd

Ed was All-District playing football for LBJ in 1980 and 1981.  He was also a District Champion in Track and Field.  Byrd attended the U.S. Air Force Academy where he excelled in Track for the Cadets.  He won the indoor Western Athletic Conference 600M in 1984.  In 1984-85 he was the Academy's Outstanding Track Competitor.  In 1995 he was the Armed Forces 400M Champ and a member of the 1600M relay team.  Byrd was also on the Armed Forces 1600M relay team in 1988.

LBJ - 1987

Ralph Carrington

Ralph ran varsity track for all 4 years at LBJ.  In 1987 he set the AISD record for the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 36:61.  The record still stands 20 years later.  He ran a National best time of 50.97 in the 400 meter hurdles in 1987. Ralph was also part of the 1600 meter relay team that set another AISD record that still stands - 3:13:89.  He played 2 years of varsity basketball at LBJ and was team MVP, his junior year, 1986.  Ralph accepted a track scholarship to Blinn College.  He was named an All-American in the 400 meter hurdles, mile relay and the 1600 meter relay.

Greg Chapman

Greg was the State Medalist for the 1978 LBJ Golf Team that won the 4A State Championship.  Greg went on to the University of Houston and then transferred to Stephen F. Austin University.  He was the National Champion Medalist in 1983.

Mike Chapman

Mike lettered at the University of Texas where he played Offensive Guard.  Chapman lettered for the Longhorns in 1981, 1982 and 1983.  In 1984 he was with the Atlanta Falcons.

Avery "AC" Cleveland

Avery Cleveland is the son of Cyril "Hitman" Friday, another member of the LBJ Jaguar Hall of Fame.  AC attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas for 3 years.  Like his Dad, AC earned a reputation as a hard hitting linebacker at LBJ High School.

Henry Colter

Henry Colter was a 6' 11" Forward/Center Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland.  As a sophomore, Colter started 11 of 26 games and averaged 4 points and 3 rebounds per game.  He also had a team-high 17 blocked shots.  He was Coach Fang Mitchell's first Texas recruit.

Robert Crenshaw played Defensive Back for the University of Texas.  Crenshaw lettered for the Longhorns in 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996.

Ron Davis

Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas from 1987-1989.  Davis transferred to Northeastern Louisiana University to complete his collegiate career as a cornerback and kick returner after Lamar University dropped their football program.

Vaughn Deary

Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas.  Deary led the conference in yards per carry at 7.7 as a Freshmen.  He played RB Freshman thru Junior Year...and WR his Senior year.  Deary ranks 5th on the all-time single season reception list with 50 catches in 1983.  He is 7th all-time on the single season receiving yards list with 711 yards in 1983. 
Team won the Lone Star Conference in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983.
Won a NCAA Div II National Championship in 1981 & 1982.
Dreary made 1st team All Lone Star Conference in 1983.

Aaron Fletcher

Played for the Laredo Law of the Arenafootball2 League in 2004.  The Austin,Texas native played from 1997-98 at Texas A&M Commerce. He was a preseason All-Conference Lone Star selection in 1998. Fletcher had four interceptions in his first five games as a senior, before getting hurt. He was a top 25 pro prospect at his position, who played at Ranger Junior College from 1995-96. Fletcher was the Defensive Player of the Year as a corner back for the Southwest Junior College football conference in 1996. He attended Austin LBJ High School where as a senior he was a Blue Chip prospect in the state of Texas as a wide receiver. He was also an All-CenTex selection as a junior. Fletcher has a B.A. degree in Health Education. He now resides in Dallas.

Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas.  Fletcher played quarterback for the LBJ Jaguars.  He redshirted his freshmen year as a QB at TCU, then was on the roster as a free safety in 1985.

Mario Freeman

Mario Freeman, pictured here with University of Oklahoma Head Coach Gary Gibbs, was named to Dave Campbell's "Texas Football Magazine" 1990 Super Team, 2nd team defense  as a 6'1", 198 lb linebacker.  At Oklahoma, Freeman was an All Big-8 linebacker in 1993.

LBJ - 1980

Cyril "Hitman" Friday

Cyril Friday, aka " Hitman" played linebacker for the Jaguars and at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State).  He played for the Bobcats from 1980 thru 1983. "Hitman" was a 2-time second team All American and three-time first team all-Lone Star Conference performer.  He played on 2 NCAA Division II national championship teams under legendary Coach Jim Wacker.  The team went 13-1 in 1981 and 14-0 in 1982. Friday posted the 9th best single season tackle mark with 119. He is still 5th in career tackles with 362 and tied for second in career sacks with 27.5.  He was the SWT freshman of the year in 1980 and defensive player of the year in 1983.  His son, Avery "AC" Cleveland also played linebacker at LBJ and is now enrolled at SMU.

Alex Gagarin was a 2-time Parade Magazine All-American as a soccer Goalkeeper.  At the University of Texas Alex, a Plan II student, continues to excel.

Joe Ghrist

Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas.  Joe played on both National Championship teams at SWT.  In 1981 the Bobcats, under Coach Jim Wacker, went 13-1.  The next year, 1982, the team was undefeated team with a 14-0 record.  Joe lettered four years at SWT and earned 1st team All Conference Honors in 1985 as an offensive guard.
While at LBJ, Ghrist earned All District honors as defensive / offensive tackle on the mighty Jaguar team that brought the school its 1st outright District Championship.

As a Redshirt (2004-05): Sat out the season after undergoing right knee surgery in the summer of 2004...expected back at full strength for the 2005-06 campaign.

Lon Morris College (2002-04): Helped head coach Dale Dotson's Bearcats to the 2004 NJCAA Tournament where they finished with a ranking of No. 14 in the country with a 26-8 mark…averaged six points, 4.9 assists and had 52 steals as a sophomore…ranked sixth regionally in assists…impressive assist-to-turnover ratio of 3:1 in 2003-04…Texas Region XIV all-conference honorable mention selection…listed in Who's Who Among Junior College Students.

Prep and Personal Data: A four-year starter at Austin's Lyndon B. Max Hargrove

Texas Lutheran College, Seguin, Texas.

Max earned his starting position with the Jags as a cornerback his junior year. He received All-District honors and became a key player for the Jags his senior year where he led the team in interceptions and also started on offense, defense, and special teams. In track and field Max was a District champion, regional champion, and state competitor in the 4x100 meter relay. He was also a member of the Science Academy and the National Honor Society.  In his freshman year in college at TLU Max was a top freshman prospect and earned a position at cornerback and on special teams.  Max also made the Dean's List and was inducted into the Honor Society with a GPA of 3.8 his first year at TLU.

Mark finished second to State Medalist Mark Chapman for the 1978 LBJ Golf Team that won the 4A State Championship.  Mark went to Rice where he played for the Rice golf team and earned a Bachelor and Masters degree.

Derrick Hill

Derrick Hill was a 6'8" Senior Post at Louisiana State University in Shreveport..  He played his junior season at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.  He spent the previous 2 years at Angelina Junior College.  Derrick Hill, a 6’8 transfer from Midwestern State University, earned two honors in 2004-05 for his outstanding play. Derrick Hill led both the conference and the nation in blocked shots averaging 4.5 a game. He also led the conference in rebounding averaging 11 boards a game. This stat was good enough to rank him 5th in the country. For these numbers, Derrick was named to the All-Conference team and was selected as the GCAC Newcomer of the Year.

Eric Holle

Eric Holle was a 2-year letterman at the University of Texas where he played Defensive End.  Holle was All-Southwest Conference selection in 1983.  He was drafted in the 5th round, the 117th overall pick, by the Kansas City Chiefs.  Holle played for the Chiefs from 1984 thru 1987.  Holle played with the Houston Oilers in 1989.

Chris Houston

University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Arkansas.  Pictured with Coach Houston Nutt.  The 5'11', 175 lb. Houston played running back and cornerback in high school. Rivals.com ranked him as the nation’s No. 32 cornerback. He was ranked as the No. 66 player in the Texas Top 100. At LBJ he rushed for 426 yards and six touchdowns before moving exclusively to cornerback in his senior season. He also played guard on the Runnin' Jags basketball team. IN addition to Arkansas, he was recruited by LSU, Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, Arizona, Houston and Kansas State. He was a member of the PrepStar All-Region IV Team.

Ray Jackson

Ray Jackson was one of the University of Michigan's Fab Five, playing alongside Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose and Jimmy King.  Jackson played all 4 years at Michigan,  averaging 10.1 ppg, while playing 26 minutes per game. The Fab Five made it to the NCAA Tournament Championship game as freshmen in 1992, losing to Duke.  He was drafted in the 3rd round by the Grand Rapid Hoops of the CBA and was Rookie of the Year in 1995-96.

Eric Jeffries

Eric Jeffries played Cornerback for the University of Texas.  Jeffries lettered for the Longhorns in 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1986.  He was drafted in the 12th round by the Chicago Bears in 1987.

Edward Johnson

Southwest Texas State University, now Texas State University, in San Marcos, Texas.  Johnson was an all around player for the Bobcats, lettering in 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1986.  He played free safety and strong safety on defense and was also used as a wide receiver and tight end during his career at SWT.  Johnson was a member of the 1982 NCAA Division II National Championship team with a 14-0 record.  During his time at SWT the team was also co-champions of  the Lone Star Conference with a 9-2 record in 1983.

Notre Dame Defensive Back from 1990 thru 1993 under Head Coach Lou Holtz.  On November 13, 1993, Lane's Fighting Irish team played #1 ranked Florida State and Lane's former teammate at LBJ, Ken Alexander.  Notre Dame prevailed 31-24.

Grid-Wire All-American.  Lee transferred to Mississippi State University, Starkville, Mississippi where he started on the offensive line at left guard for the 2000 and 2001 Bulldogs, under head Coach Jackie Sherrill.  Team finished ranked 24th in the country by AP and defeated Texas A&M in the Independence Bowl.

Mason played wide receiver and returned kickoffs for the University of Mary Hardin Baylor Crusaders, in Belton, Texas.  The year he graduated, 2002, the Crusaders were American Southwest Conference Champions.

Shon Mitchell

As a high school senior, Mitchell broke the Austin Independent School District's rushing record with 2,076 yards and added 23 touchdowns.  The old record of 1679 yards in 10 games was held for 18 years by LBJ Coach David Seaborn. Mitchell earned second-team Junior College All-America honors at Blinn College.  Mitchell earned Southwestern Conference Newcomer of the Year honors in 1995 after becoming just the sixth Longhorn to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season (1,099 yards on 176 carries, 6.2 avg.).  Mitchell played for the Longhorns from 1995-96 and has seen action professionally with the San Francisco 49ers (National Football League), the London Monarchs of (NFL Europe) and the Tulsa Talons and River City Renegades (Arena League).

Robert Moore

Valley Forge Military Academy & College, Wayne, Pennsylvania.  Moore transferred to Langston University, an NAIA school, located in Langston, Oklahoma, where he was a  wide receiver for the Lions. Robert is playing the 2006 season at Texas Lutheran University in Sequin, Texas.

Abilene Christian University, Abilene, Texas.  Red-shirted first year at ACU and then started for three years.  Was awarded the Purple and White ACU spirit award in 90 and went on to play the inaugural year with the Dallas Texans of the Arena football league. In Dallas played center and nose guard and start all but one game. Went on to play rugby after football shedding the pads and pounds to be a formidable threat running the ball up the pitch.  Was selected to the Texas Select side in 93,94,95 and 96 was selected to the Western Select side representing the western states in the US territory in 94,95 and 96 and was selected to the USA Eagles in 1996 in the Pacific Rim Championship.

Nanus graduated with a bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice and currently work for Dell computer as a services sales consultant in Dell Federal Sales Division.

Demo Odems played WR on the University of Iowa team that won the Alamo Bowl in 1996.  Odems played 2 years for the Grand Rapids Rampage of the Arena Football League.  Received Rampage Coaches' Award for efforts at WR and DB.  After coaching for several years at LBJ High School, Odems is now an  assistant coach at Lancaster (TX) High School.

Kerry Overton

Rice University, Houston, Texas.  Overton quarterbacked the Owls in 1984 and 1985 and played his way into the Rice record book.  In 1984 he led the Southwest Conference in passing, completing 117 of 271 attempts, a .432 completion percentage.  He threw for 1593 yards, 7 TDs and 16 interceptions.  That same year he led the Owls in total offense with 1620 yards, an average of 147.3 per game.  In 1985 versus Air Force, Overton completed the longest passing play in Rice history - an 86 yard completion to Elliston Stinson.  he also had a 75-yard completion to Keith Lewis against Baylor in 1984 - good for 8th on the all-time list.

Henderson County Junior College, Athens, Texas.  In 1986, the school's name was changed to Trinity Valley Community College.  The TVCC Cardinals boast a rich football tradition, bolstered by 2 national junior college championships - 1994 and 1997.

U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland.  Price is a 6', 195 lb defensive back for the Midshipmen.  He worked his way into the line-up at the Naval Academy as a freshman.  He ended his freshman season at Navy with 37 tackles and was a contributor for Navy in their EV1.Net Bowl game at Reliant Stadium in Houston against Texas Tech.

Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas.  Richard was an All-District performer for the Jaguars.  He lettered all 4 years at TCU and was a 4-year starter at offensive guard.  Richard was signed by the Green Bay Packers but did not make the final cut.

Chris Sanders  

Chris Sanders was named to the 2nd Team of Dave Campbell's "Texas Football Magazine" 1990 Super Team.  Sanders was a 6'5", 207 lb. Defensive Back at LBJ.  Sanders played receiver for Texas A&M in 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1995.  Playing as a true freshman, he caught 3 passes for 36 yards.  In 1994 he caught 22 passes for 422 yards and 4 TDs.  As a junior, Sanders led the team with 19.2 yards per catch, including a 75-yard TD against Baylor.  As a senior he ranked 3rd on the team with 23 catches for 281 yards.  His best game was against Texas Tech when he had 15 receptions for 77 yards.  His career high was 107 yards vs. TCU in 1994. In all, Sanders started 16 games for the Aggies, including 10 as a senior in 1995.

Sedrick Shaw

Sedrick Shaw had a stellar football career at the University of Iowa.  He left Iowa as the all-time leading rusher in Iowa history with 4156 yards on 837 carries and 33 TDs. He was MVP of the 1996 Alamo Bowl.  Shaw was a 3rd round draft pick of the New England Patriots.  In 1999 Shaw was traded to the Cleveland Browns and ended his NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2000.

Lamont Truitt

Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, Missouri.  Pictured here with Coach Willie Fritz, who coached Truitt at Blinn College before accepting the head coaching position at CMSU.  Truitt played defensive back for the CMSU Mules in the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA).  He ranks 10th on the Mules career interceptions list with 7 picks over 2 seasons (1998-1999).  Truitt earned 1st team MIAA All-Conference honors as a defensive back in 1998 and 1999.

 

Truitt also participated in track for CMSU, running the 100m, 200m and 400m.

 

Since graduating from CMSU in 1999, Truitt has played in the National Indoor Football League for the Sioux City Bandits in Sioux City, Iowa.  He plays defensive back and running back for the Bandits.

David Wren

Baylor University, Waco, Texas.  David Wren, pictured here with Baylor Head Coach, Kevin Steele, signed with the Bears as a defensive lineman.  He transferred to Angelo State University, San Angelo, Texas in 2003.  Wren played in 11 games in 2003, recording 18 solo tackles and 17 assisted tackles for the Rams.
